Why skylights can create different window film challenges
Skylights receive strong solar exposure and can contribute to heat, glare and fading in the rooms below them. Because of their angle and glass construction, they also need to be evaluated carefully before film is selected.
The correct product depends on the skylight glass, coatings, orientation, size and the performance goal.
Reducing solar heat through skylights
Solar-control window film can reduce solar heat gain through treated skylight glass. That can improve comfort in rooms that become noticeably hotter when direct sun enters from above.
The amount of improvement depends on the glass, film and exposure. It is better to evaluate the film by its actual solar-performance specifications than by darkness alone.
Controlling glare and excessive brightness
Skylights can create intense visible brightness even when a room does not feel especially hot. Glare-control film reduces visible light entering the space, which can make it easier to use televisions, computer screens and work areas beneath or near the skylight.
Stronger glare reduction generally means less visible light, so product selection is a balance between comfort and how bright the room should remain.
UV reduction and fading
Many professional architectural films reduce up to 99% of ultraviolet transmission through treated glass. That can help slow fading of flooring, furniture, artwork and other finishes exposed to sunlight from the skylight.
UV is not the only cause of fading. Visible light, solar heat and the materials themselves also contribute.
Glass compatibility is especially important
Skylights may use insulated, tempered, laminated or Low-E glazing. Film absorption, pane construction, coating location and solar exposure all affect whether a particular product is appropriate.
In some skylight applications, an exterior film is a better fit than an interior film. The glass should be identified before the product is specified.
Interior vs. exterior skylight film
Interior film is suitable for many applications, but it is not automatically the right choice for every skylight. Exterior films are designed to be installed on the outside surface and can be useful when the glazing configuration or solar load makes an interior product less appropriate.
Installation access affects the project
Skylights can require ladders, scaffolding or other access equipment depending on ceiling height and location. Furniture protection, work-area access and safe positioning all affect the installation plan.
The installer also has to account for the angle of the glass and manage installation solution carefully on overhead or sloped surfaces.
