What does UV-reducing window film actually do?

Many professional architectural window films are designed to reduce up to 99% of ultraviolet transmission through treated glass. That makes UV reduction one of the most common reasons homeowners, offices, retailers and other facilities consider window film.

The important distinction is that UV reduction is one performance characteristic. It is not the same thing as solar heat rejection, glare reduction or visible-light transmission.

How UV exposure contributes to fading

Ultraviolet radiation is one contributor to fading and deterioration of flooring, furniture, fabrics, artwork, merchandise and other interior finishes. Reducing UV transmission through the glass can help slow that process.

UV is not the only cause of fading, however. Visible light, solar heat, dyes, pigments and the material itself also affect how quickly a surface changes. Window film should therefore be described as helping slow fading, not as preventing it completely.

Does UV-blocking film have to be dark?

No. Some architectural films are very light in appearance while still providing substantial UV reduction. A homeowner or business that wants to preserve natural light may be able to choose a light film, while a space with strong heat or glare may benefit from a different solar-control product.

The right choice depends on the problem you are trying to solve, not simply the UV number on a specification sheet.

UV reduction is different from heat rejection

A film can provide strong UV reduction without being the strongest solar heat-rejection film. Solar heat performance, visible light and reflectivity need to be evaluated separately.

What about Low-E and insulated glass?

Film compatibility should always be checked before installation. Insulated glass, Low-E coatings, laminated glass, tempered glass, orientation and solar exposure can all affect which product is appropriate. In some applications, an exterior film is a better fit than an interior product.

No product can guarantee that fading will stop completely. Window film can reduce UV exposure and, depending on the product, visible light and solar heat, which can help slow fading.

Does clear UV film reduce heat?

Some light films provide solar-control benefits, but UV reduction and solar heat rejection are separate specifications. A film should be selected based on the complete performance goal.

Will UV film change the appearance of my windows?
