Let newly installed window film dry before cleaning it
Architectural window film is installed with a solution between the film and the glass. That moisture has to work its way out as the film dries. Depending on the film, glass, temperature, sun exposure and humidity, the drying period can take several weeks. Thicker safety and security films can take longer.
During that period, some haze, small water pockets or a slightly cloudy appearance can be normal. Avoid picking at edges or trying to push out moisture yourself.
Use a soft, non-abrasive cleaning method
Once the film has dried enough to clean, use a soft microfiber cloth, soft sponge or clean rubber squeegee. A mild soap-and-water solution or a cleaner approved for window film is usually appropriate.
Avoid abrasive pads, razor blades, hard scrapers and anything that can scratch the film surface. The film is durable, but it is still a finished surface applied to the glass.
Be careful around the film edges
The edges of the film are more vulnerable to damage than the middle of the pane. Do not dig a cloth, blade or brush into the perimeter. When wiping near the edge, use light pressure and work away from the edge rather than aggressively across it.
Do you need an ammonia-free cleaner?
Cleaner recommendations vary by film manufacturer and product. Rather than relying on a blanket rule, follow the care instructions for the specific film installed. When in doubt, a mild soap-and-water solution and a soft cloth are a conservative choice.
How often should window film be cleaned?
There is no special cleaning schedule required just because film is installed. Clean the glass as needed for appearance, using the correct tools and cleaner. Normal residential and commercial maintenance is usually enough.
What should you do if the film bubbles, peels or changes color?
If you notice persistent bubbling after the normal drying period, lifting edges, peeling, unusual discoloration or another change that appears to be in the film rather than dirt on the surface, contact the installer before trying to repair it yourself.
Some appearance issues are installation-related, some are caused by damage after installation, and others can be product or glass related. The installer can usually identify the difference more accurately in person.
Can pressure washing or aggressive commercial cleaning damage film?
Yes. High-pressure equipment, abrasive pads, hard blades and aggressive cleaning around edges can damage installed film. Commercial cleaning crews should be told which panes are filmed and given the correct care instructions before they begin.
Special considerations for safety and security film
Thicker safety and security films can have longer drying times than standard solar-control film. If the system includes a structural attachment around the perimeter, that attachment should also be left intact and should not be cut, pulled or disturbed during cleaning.

Does exterior window film require different care?
Exterior film is exposed to weather, exterior washing and more environmental contamination than interior film. Care instructions can vary by product, so the manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance guidance matters. Avoid aggressive scrubbing and scraping unless the product instructions specifically allow it.
